The best way to learn is to mix some formal training with our Conway Yacht Club Skills Progression Course.
RYA sail training
RYA sail training courses are typically 2 day courses with a qualified instructor. The RYA Start Sailing series has three levels and a certificate is awarded at each level. Further courses are available to concentrate on specific areas of sailing.
CYC is not a certified RYA Sail Training club but these courses are available at our kindred sailing clubs at Llandudno SC, and Y Felinheli | Port Dinorwic SC.
In addition, we are lucky to have the National Outdoor Centre for Wales at Plas Menai which offers all the RYA courses and a wide variety of related training.
CYC Skills Progression Course
HAVE A GO!
If you’ve never been on a sailing boat before but would like to give it a try, a taster sail on a Conway One Design is a great way to see what all the fuss is about. The Conway One Design is stable and strong.
No charge, free day membership of the club.
Under the supervision of an experienced skipper, you will spend about 30 mins on the boat in the marina, getting her ready and then about an hour sailing as crew in the protected waters of Conwy Harbour.
CYC Competent Keelboat Crew
Three 1 hour theory sessions at the Clubhouse covering the basics.
Plus
Six 2 hour sessions on the water on one of our Conway One Design keelboats, with an experienced skipper.
At the end of this course you will be able to crew a COD including helming under supervision.
CYC Confident Keelboat Skipper
Six 2 hour sessions on the water on one of our Conway One Design keelboats, with an experienced skipper.
At the end of this course, and following a checkout with the Sailing Captain, you will be able sail a COD with your own crew, unsupervised.
CYC Introduction to Racing
A one hour theory session in the Clubhouse to cover the basics of sail racing
Three 2 hour sessions on the water as skipper of your own COD with an experienced skipper crewing for you to guide you through the main aspects of a race.
At the end of this course, you will be able race your COD in the CYC racing programme or enter the Menai Strait Regattas at Beaumaris.

* We do not like to sail in adverse weather conditions! e.g. strong wind (over about 20mph) and or heavy rain.
