Menai Strait Regattas 2025

First Week Report 27 July 2025

An excellent first week in this amazing event which promises to be the best Regattas for a long while.

Conway Yacht Club’s regatta saw fresh winds and excellent sailing for all competitors.

There have been Regattas at Beaumaris for over 100 years.

Each day a different local club hosts a regatta for up to 12 fleets of sailing yachts of various classes

The courses vary according to tides and winds but include a number of special races including the Round Puffin, and the Race Through from Beaumaris to Caernarfon

Conway Yacht Club is one of nine local clubs that come together to create this annual event.

This year, three Conway One Design’s have made the crossing from Conwy to Beaumaris to enter the Regattas: Gwalch (no. 8); Mercury (no. 15) and Alys (no. 19).

Mercury is jointly owned by the Hiller brothers, Edward and James, and this is there first year sailing her. They have had a cracking week with four 1st and one 2nd and are the winners of the Seiriol Trophy for the first week series.

Gwalch has been doing well with one 1st and three 2nds.

Alys has never been far behind with one 1st and one 2nd

The sailing is supported by ribs and launches from each of the clubs and Sior, our launch, made the trip over with the CODs last Saturday and has been doing sterling work, ferrying crews to there boats, towing, and assisting boats that have gone aground! Thanks very much to Peter Quilliam, Peter Hamer, Paul Burrows and their crews for the support which is much appreciated not just by the CYC boats but all those in the regattas.

Friday 25th July was our day to host the regatta. Thanks to the line team: Race Officer Garth Griffith, Commodore Steve Wotherspoon, Pam MacDonald, Safety Officer Rob Smith, Flags Marcus Elliot, Spotters Jeremy Byron, Ian MacDonald, Chris Brigg, Mike Gunning, Colin Lee, Keith Simpson. Also to Ben Nichols and his team for the catering and Rosie Eckett for Trophies.

Thanks to Gary Thomas, Jean Hamer and Rhian Clarke for the photographs!
